In Rhode Island there are special fishing tournaments held several times throughout the year and there is a year long tournament that runs all twelve months. According to the organizations website risaa.org is you are a RISSA member there are no entry fees and official weight slips are available at each monthly meeting, sanctioned bait shops or by calling RiSSA. For the year long competition there are two divisions junior and adult and boat and shore within those divisions. The Special tournaments are held only certain dates in the year this year they are as follows; Fluke Tournament the event is for individual fisherman June 16-25th, Team Fluke Challenge is the event for team anglers July 8-9th, Black Sea Bass Tournament is for individual anglers Sept. 15-24th, Bluefish Tournament also an individual competition Sept. 29th – Oct.9th and Fall Tautog Tournament an individual competition Oct. 13th – 29th. The fish species for the tournaments are Black Sea Bass, Bluefish, Bonito, Cod, Alcabore, Fluke, Mahi Mahi, Pollock, Scup, Stripe Bass and Tautog.


On April 20 through the 23rd a fishing battle will take place in the Bahamas, this island has some of the best trophy fishing in the world. The Island is a tropical paradise with white sandy beaches and warm waters with a tropical climate always in the 80’s and 90’s. On Saturday, June 10th the 5th Annual Offshore Rodeo Fishing Tournament will be happening at the Bootleggers Waterfront Grill and Salty Sam’s Marina. All the events’ proceeds will go to the charity of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida. Their will be a total of ten fish species to catch to win the nice cash prizes there are two categories the Pro Division and the Amateur Division. The fish species include African Pompano, Cobia, Dolphin, Grouper, Hogfish, Kingfish, Snapper, Triple tail, Tuna, and Wahoo. For the Pro Division first place prize is $6,000 2nd place is $3,000 and 3rd place is $1,500. For the Amateur Division first place prize is $4,000, 2nd $2,000 and 3rd $1,000. Pre-Registration is required and the fee to register for an adult angler is $250 and children are $25 dollars. The event will commence at 6:00am early weigh in is at 4:00pm final closing weigh in at 6pm, then after enjoy music, dinner and drinks, they will have an awards ceremony at 7:30 and silent and live auctions. The event is held on Port Isabel and South Padre Island off of Texas, the fishing tournament is on August 2nd through August 6th. This tournament has been around for decades and was founded by Doc. J.A. Hockaday, this event is open to be people of all ages and is offshore fishing. It has been known to have over 1000 fishermen enter the competition and have over 500 boats in the water. Many locals and TX resident flock to the event to witness the fierce tournament, fishermen catch blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish. The fish are brought to the docks and weighed and in the junior competition they do the same weighing in their speckled trout, redfish and flounders. When children sign up for the competition whether if they win or not they are each given a trophy for effort and participation. On August 15th & 19th in Madeira Beach the 46th Annual Loop Billfish Tournament will be held, species includeBlue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish & Swordfish (catch & release only). Prizes will be based on the amount of boat entries, sponsors include Suzuki Repower, Iland Lures, Ocean-Tamer and more. Also in Madeira Beach on Sept. 7th & 9th is the Ladies Inshore/offshore Fishing Tournament, species types are Grouper, Snapper, Amberjack, Sea Trout, Redfish (photo release) plus Flounder, Spanish Mackerel & Sheephead. Prizes include 1st place $500, 2nd place $300 and 3rd place $200 per species. This tournament brings together over 200 plus a year, there is a captains party with silent and live auctions, arts and crafts booths to visit and much more. The Bass Pro Shops are having their annual fishing show and sale according to its website, the events will be from February 17- March 5th. You can choose from reel trade-in so you bring in your old reel and they give you a trade in coupon towards your new reel. They also have a free women’s fishing workshop Sat. March 4 @ 1:30 where women can learn fishing basics, another event this month is the bass master presented by the pros. Some fishing contests include winning a fishing trip with Jimmy Houston worth $5000, they also have Next Generation Weekend March 4 & 5th it is a kids workshop in the release pond you get tips, education and hands on catch and release. The event for kids is all about fishing and kids so they can enjoy making decorating wood bobbers and get a free kids fish foam cap and also taking pictures in the fishing fun chalk or the big mouth in charge booth. On June 19th-24th, is the World Predator Classic Boat Event, it is a three day event, anglers must be 18 or older to participate and the event follows the (CPR) format (catch, photo and release) for the fish to count. The fishing species is pike, zander and perch, the entry fee includes the fishing permit and liability license, captain’s dinner, drinks and entertainment, welcome gift and a prize table. Boats should be registered and are permitted to anglers and considered a team for the event competing against other teams. All boats will be checked before the competition for proper documentation and gear and equipment, no fishing can occur if the boat engine is on during the event. The prizes are still to be announced but trophies, glasses, plano products, t-shirts are always awarded last year a Tracker Pro- Guide V-175 SC with Mercury Pro XS115HP was given to the first place winner. It was reported by Chris Brown on Sept. 28, 2016 that the FLW had made some changes for the 2017 Bass Fishing League, they will have a total of 128 tournaments throughout the year within twenty-four categories. Approximated $8 million in awards with up to $120,000 to the winning boater and $60,000 to the winning co-angler and they will be entered to win the Forrest Wood Cup for the world championship. For this years tournaments the league has added the “Win and You are In” with this new change the anglers are never out of the running if you entered and participated in a certain division. Since the tournaments are based on a point system so even if you didn’t fish your best at one event you will still be allowed to enter with a late season win. On May 7th, the Kayak League Tournament will host Bass tournaments it will be open to the general public and KBL members in IL, WN, IN, IO, MI and MN you have to register to participate. The entry fee is $40 if you enter before the cut off date if you pay the day of the event it will be $45 dollars. The start time of the event will be at 7:30am and finish at 1:00pm, in each of the five events participants will have a 5 fish limit with a maximum of 12 inches in length for both large mouth and small mouth bass. Their will be three payout 1st place, 2nd place and third place. On Saturday, September 9th-17th, 2017 is the 58th Annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament off of the Kona Coast. According to the HIBT this tournament came into affect in 1959 two days after HA became a state of the USA and in 1960 women were allowed to participate in the event one day only, then in 1961 women were allowed to compete the entire duration of the tournament same as the men and in 2009 the HIBT had its 50th anniversary and continues strong today. On June 9th & 11th the annual Kewalo Harbor Big Fish Chase will happen on the island of Oahu, HA this fishing tournament is rooted in history here. Back in June 10th 1970 is was reported that a captain named Cornelius Choy reeled in a monster blue marlin weighing in at 1,805 pounds. Cash prizes for the largest Marlin, Ahi, Ono and Mahimahi are the fish species, for payouts, you must register and pay the entry fee if entering by check the amount is $500 if paying by credit card the entry fee is $525. Entry fees vary depending on the competition category and if registering as a team or solo teams consist of up to 4 members. Last year in 2016 according to Hawaii Marlin Tournament website payouts were very large with the Marlin Magic winning $233,490. On June 10th at 7am-4pm is fishing time the from 4pm – 6:30 is the weigh in and Pau Hana and the same thing the next day. All participants must sign a tournament release of liability and publicity waiver and all participants must adhere to the rules and regulations of the International Game Fishing Association Angling Rules a copy is provided to all anglers before the tournament.


On March 24th-26th, 2017, is the annual Bass Master Tournament presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods, presented Geico and will be held on Lake Conroe in the Minute Maid Park in Houston, TX. The event is free to the general public daily, there is so much to do and see at this event including boat demos, fishing weigh – ins, and outdoor expos to visit. The event will have the Miss Geico Speedboat, professional fishermen appaearances so make sure to bring your book and pen to get an autograph. The event will have a line spooling booth by Berkley bring up to three reels for free spooling with the line of your choice up to 300 yards per reel you can also have them the your knot all for free. The vendors will be giving away free gift bags and prizes such as hats and raffle tickets. On April 19th through the 22nd is the Fishing for Charities Kingfish Tournament hosted by the Rotary Club of Clearwater, FL. This event encompasses the community, anglers and it’s sponsors and has managed to donated over $1 million dollars to Tampa Bay charities according to its website clearwaterrotary.org. This years event will consist of four divisions the Overall, Spanish, Single Engine and Youth and Rotary fishing divisions. The fish species are King Mackerel and Spanish Mackerel, 1st place will recieve $5 thousand dollars with last place receiving $1 thousand dollars and other prizes will be awarded. The registration entry fee is $300 per boat and all boats will be issued an id number which must be displayed visibly at all times on the boat during the competition. There will be a Captain’s party and silent auction is on Wednesday, April 19th starting at 6pm, this is where the official rules of the fishing tournament will also be reviewed to all. The fish tournament final weigh in will be at the Island Way Grill.


On June 9, 10 and 11th is the 10th Annual Fire Charity Fishing Foundation Tournament in Bradenton, FL at the Bradenton Yacht Club, this annual event has something for everyone to enjoy. This special charity fishing event helps raise money for the children who are victims and were burned badly and now look different then before. The event was started by firefighters, the event has live music, food,bounce houses, face painting, wall climbing, raffles and much more. The teams are made up of local responders and the winning team receives a trophy to keep in there fire station for a year. The FCFF also has a women anglers competition and kid’s fishing tournament held the same day. On May 4th and 6th is the 34th Annual Yamaha Contender Miami Sportfish Tournament at the Miami Beach Marina, in South Beach, FL. The fishing tournament will have something for the whole family, food from Flanigan’s, live music, educational programs and more. On May 13th is the Carolinas Bass Challenge Fishing Tournament in North Carolina in High Rock at the Tamarac Marina. The entry fee is $200 teams can consist of two anglers or one angler, weigh ins and boat launching will be at the Tamarac Marina all participants must check in and acquire rules at the weigh in trailer before fishing. Start time is in the early morning sunlight and will finish at 3pm, if the weather is bad or foggy the tournament could be cancelled by the CBC director. 1st place winners will have 300 points 2nd place 299 and 3rd place 298 points, if there is a tie the prize money will be split evenly among the two contestants. The CBC does not allow trolling or long lining and no live bait is permitted all fish must be caught using a fishing rod and reel with fake bait. The CBC has a five bass limit and dead getting weighed will have a 4 ounce penalty deduction. On Saturday, May 27, is the Third Coast Fishing Tournament starting at 6am, it will be held in Corpus Christi, TX at the Bluff’s Landing Marina & Lodge. The one day event will go on rain or shine so bring a raincoat just in case, the tournament began back in 2001 to help raise funds and awareness in the community regarding the youth. The weigh in stations are at Bluff’s Landing from 1pm-3pm, the grand prize is $5,000 for the heaviest redfish or trout, their will be a total of 15 cash prizes equalling $10,000. On May 25th is the 11th Annual Armed Services Combat Fishing Tournament, in Jber, Alaska. The Armed Services YMCA was started back in 2006 and it was founded as a way to show appreciation to the military’s men and women who have served our country in the middle east. The tournament has the support of many boat charter companies including Seward deep sea charter and other local charter boats that are donated for this fishing tournament. There are many chapters throughout the US that you can be a part of either as a competitor, volunteer, sponsor or donor. On April 28th – 30th is the Pleasure Island Team Surf Fishing Challenge in Pleasure Island, North Carolina the event will be held at the Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Fort Fisher. On May, 13th is the Carolina Bass Challenge at High Rock Lake in North Carolina, the entry fee is $200 per team, you must be a member of the CBC Trail and a $50 membership fee is required. The membership includes entry to all tournaments and a free subscription to Bass Times Magazine, cash payouts vary for the different tournaments there is also the skeeter bonuses from $1,000 to $4,000 dollars. On May 27th and 28th is the Team Tybee’s Beach Slam Fishing Tournament in Northbeach, GA sponsored by the Tybee Fishing Co. The event is a catch, photo and release competition, anglers are allowed to use both live and artificial baits. Registration is at 7am and the first cast line out will be at 8am on the 27th the finishing time will be at 5pm and on the 28th the finishing time will be at 4pm. The event is a saltwater event and all participating anglers must have and carry a valid GA saltwater fishing license. The fish species for the event are Redfish, Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, Whiting, Bluefish, Ladyfish and Pompano. The winners will be determined by the fish species having the most total inches. On April 27th through the 29th, Bretts Fishing Center Presents the 24th Annual Old Salt King of the Beach, in Madeira Beach, FL this fishing tournament has been around for years. This years event has an overall payout of $50,000 dollars with cash payouts in the Single Outboard Engine Division, Spanish Mackerel Division, Ladies Division, Youth Division, Traveling Angler Division and Greenhorn Division. The tournament entry fees are $195 for members and $235 for non-members, the fish species for the tournament is King Mackerel and Spanish Mackerel. On Saturday, May 20 – 21st will be the 33rd Annual No Name Fishing Tournament in Lake George, CO located at Eleven Mile State Park (North Boat Ramp). Prior registration and fees must be paid prior, the tournament is open to all and the tournament will consist of three fish species including Trout, Northern Pike and Salmon. 1st place will be for the largest weighing trout, 2nd place will be for the largest weighing pike and 3td place will be for the largest weighing salmon. On April 29th-30th is the 9th Annual Rock the Dock Fishing Tournament in Panacea, FL at the Woolley Park. To participate in the fishing tournament you must register before and pay the entry fee prices vary depending on divisions. The final fish weigh ins will be on Sat. from 3pm to 6pm and Sunday from 12:00 – 4pm so you must be in line with your fish within these times to qualify for the jackpot. The fish species for the recreational division off shore and in shore is Cobia, Grouper and King Fish. For the Crum’s mini division the fish species is Grouper only, for the Kayak Division the fish species is Flounder, Red Fish and Trout only. For the Youth Division ages 15 years old or younger the species to catch is Flounder, Grouper, Kingfish, Red Fish, Rock Bass, Spanish Mackerel and trout.


On April, 25th – 30th is the Final Sail Grand Finale in Key West, FL it is the “Quest for the Crest Sailfish Series”. The event is estimated at $3,000,000 dollars for the winning team, it is a series tournament because it is in four parts throughout the state the first tournament is Operation Sailfish in December 7-11th in Singer Island, FL. The second event is Sail 400 in Miami January 11-15th, FL, the third event is the Sailfish Challenge Feb. 22-26th in Fort Lauderdale, FL and the 4th and final tournament is in Key West, FL the Final Sail. To participate in these event you must be a member of this exclusive club and to participate in the different tournaments you must also pay to register typically $3,750 per boat per event. For the Final Sail you can weigh in four per species and 10 fish per boat and anglers can have up to seven lines in the water during the tournament. Event starts at 8am and finishes at 4pm both days eligible fish species are Dolphin, Wahoo, Kingfish, Black Tuna and Cobia.


The Angler Armory is presenting the Wild West King Fish Tournament Series on three separate date one is on Saturday, April 22nd in Madeira Beach, FL at the John’s Pass Village Bell Tower. The second tournament date is Thursday, May 6th at the same location and the last tournament date is Saturday, October 7th at the same location. All scheduled events will have a captain’s meeting and party the Thursday before the event at 6:30 and will raffle of a new Mercury Motor. The day of the fishing tournament final weigh ins will be at 6pm for all dates. At each event the first place winners will receive a cash payout of $20,017 and other places will receive other cash and prizes. Boat teams will be required to have a fishing license for all on the boat except on charter boats which carry a captain charter license.


On April 9th Bass Addiction, Brusier Baits & Mustard Hooks presents the Free Bass Tournament, in order to participate in the tournament the anglers must use only Mustad Grip Pin Hooks, Bass Addiction gear and Bruiser baits must be used. To register is free and available online, the tournament will have cash payouts for the first 4 places 1st place will receive $1,100 2nd place $550, 3rd Place $350 and 4th place $150. The remaining 11 spots will be awarded a variety of prizes including gift cards, gear and products. The event will be held in Clewingston, FL at the Roland Martin Maine Center, the Bass Addiction company sell many types of tackle and gear for fishing. From tungstens, rope braids from 30lb. up to 65lb., limited run baits and custom baits made to order in any color or mix of colors prices range from $18-$25, hooks, jigs, punch skirts, culling systems, apparel fishing shirts, hoodies and shorts, buffs, sun and bug gear, hats and visors, gloves and logo boat/vehicle decals.


This is the 2nd annual 395 Big Fish Sierra Opener Fishing Derby, it is sponsored by the Western Outdoor News. The fishing Derby is on April 29th & 30th, last year thousands of dollars in prizes were won and we expect this year to be even better. Entry fees are $20 per person or $40 for a family of four, you can fish from anywhere i.e. a boat, canoe, pier etc. and in any lake, river or stream along the 395 corridor to the Lone Pine and Bridgeport. With every entry fee paid into the competition participants will also receive a digital subscription to Western Outdoor News. This years grand prize of the best fish weight that must be weighed in at one of the event weigh in stations only, will win a Custom 17’ Gregor Boat and Suzuki 9.9 HP Tiller Motor with EZ Loader trailer a prize valued at $8,500. The official weigh in times are April 29th 10am – 5pm and on April 30th 10am – 5pm also. The four official weir in stations for the event are located at; Reagan’s Sporting Goods, Rick’s Sport Center, Ernie’s Tackle and Ken’s Sporting Goods.


On Wednesday, May 3rd through Saturday, May 6th is the 3rd Annual Conch House Billfish Tournament hosted by the Conch House Marina. On Wednesday, May 3rd is the captains meeting at the Conch House Restaurant Top Deck from 6-8pm you can sign up to participate or register your boat. There will be raffles & live entertainment complimentary drinks and appetizers on Thursday is the official start of the tournament lines can go into the water at 8am and must be out by 3:30 weigh ins are from 4-7pm. $3000 dollars will be won for overprints, $2,500 will be awarded for the biggest Marlin, $2,000 for the daily and $500 for each Wahoo, Mahi or Tuna. Friday, May 5th is the second official fishing day of the tournament same hours apply as on Thursday. OnSaturday is the 3rd and final day of fishing, there will be a seafood boil and a silent auction held after weigh ins and the awards ceremony will be from 8-9:30 pm. On Saturday, April 22nd and 23rd is the Yellow Creek Fly Fishing Tournament, being held in Brush Valley, PA by the Yellow Creek Trout Club. The tournament is held in pairs so teams of two persons for a two day tournament is $1,000 dollars and includes two anglers, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Dinner on Sunday after the tournament at provided by Sonoma Grill, plus a sponsored Yellow Creek Fly Fishing Souvenir and fly box. For corporate teams the price is $1,500 and includes the same as for the regular team but also includes one beat sign which will feature your company logo along the stream for all to see. This event raises funds for those who suffer from cystic fibrosis in order to find a cure, prizes for the best teams will be awarded for largest brown trout and largest rainbow trout. The Bluewater Tournament is hosted annually by the Northeast Florida Marlin Association from Thursday, April 27 through Sunday, April 30th this is the 45th Annual of this welcomed event. It will be held at the Marlin Clubhouse at Camachee Cove marina in Vilano Beach, FL the fishing tournament will consist of two categories the Billfish and Gamefish. One Thursday is the captains meeting dinner at 6pm, registrants can fish in the tournament any two out of the three days. The tournament will end at 4pm on Sunday with weigh ins until 7pm, afterwards will be the awards ceremony, dinner and live entertainment, all boat types are allowed to participate and spectators are welcomed. Spectators are free of charge and welcomed the grand prizes will be approximately $35,000 in cash and prizes. Their will be three places for cash, prizes and trophies with cash prizes from for each fishing division. Anglers must adhere to all the fishing laws and regulations of the state, all boats must leave from and return to the same port either the St. Augustine, Ponce Inlet, Mayport or the Fernandina.


On Friday, June 2nd is the Mikie Pigott Jr. Classic Fishing Tournament, presented by Antigua Barbuda Sport Fishing Club. The entry fee for this tournament is $1,000, the fishing start time is at 6:30am and all fishing lines must be out be 4:30pm. The fish species are marlins only a minimum weight of 500 lbs. for blue marlins under 500 lbs. will be subject to point deductions. The tournament is for those sport fisherman that target marlins and can compete against other marlin anglers, the winner will be the angler with the most points and will receive a trophy and 80% of the entry fees. Here are some of the official sponsors of the competition Yamaha, Outdoor World, Shades, Guardian Security and others. The event launch party will be the Thursday before the competition Friday at 8pm tickets are $50 and include dinner and the clubs going over the official rules and it gives anglers a chance to meet each other before the competition and a chance to swap fishing stories. The results will be given live and will be televised on live TV.


On Saturday, June 10th is the 5th Annual Offshore Rodeo Fishing Tournament in Fort Myers, FL at Salty’s Sam’s Marina & Bootleggers Waterfront Grill. The fishing tournament is presented by Ronald McDonald House Charities, Southwest, FL benefitting children from around the world with programs, scholarships, hospitals, medical care, volunteers all for the better good of children to give them the support and happiness they need to thrive. The adult tournament entry fee starts at $250 and up and will begin at 6am, the early fish weigh in is available at 4pm and the weigh station will close at 6pm. After the tournament anglers can look forward to dinner, music and drinks at Bootleggers Waterfront Grill and awards and silent auction will follow. The kids fishing tournament will be from 10am-1pm at the Bootleggers Waterfront Grill & Parrot Key. Entry fee is $25 for kids the first 100 kids aged 12 and under who pre-register for the competition will also receive a t-shirt, fishing rod, trophy and lunch with Ronald McDonald himself. The fish species for the tournament are African Pompano, Cobia, Dolphin, Grouper, Hogfish, Kingfish, snapper, triple tail, tuna and Wahoo see official rules.
